COVID-19 Update

Cross Roads United Methodist Church

August 2020

Cross Roads Community and Extended Family,

As citizens of the global world we are all concerned about the COVID-19 pandemic threat to our community, our church family and our brothers and sisters around the world. Cross Roads, thus far we have responded through social distancing and by improving our sanitary practices; and have remained faithful through digital platforms.

As of July 29, 2020 we have been directed by our Bishop Bob Hoshibata and Conference to follow the “Stay Home, Stay Healthy, Stay Connected” practice which will result in slowing the rate of infection and death. At this time, we will continue with suspending in person worship and all other group gatherings until further notice. This pertains to all gatherings at the church, no matter how small and includes drive-up worship services, committee meetings, choir rehearsals, outside group meetings/rentals and other various church gatherings. Updates that allow for exceptions before moving into Phase I of the Re-Opening Process includes:

Beginning Wednesday, July 29, 2020, with the consent of our District Superintendent, these exceptions are allowed:

  1. If you have a written agreement with a third-party entity for the use of the church, you may be required legally to honor that agreement and allow for the entity to use the church campus. Please work on updating your agreements and making clear what the responsibilities for cleaning/sanitizing after use, even if the church is not meeting for worship. Please inform your District Superintendent if you have not already done so.
  2. Churches that want to record or livestream worship with a group of no more than 5 persons are permitted to do so. Please inform your District Superintendent if you have not already done so.
  3. Food pantries and clothing centers offered by the church in response to the needs of the hungry in the community may resume these ministries of caring and compassion following strict no-contact safety guidelines.
  4. Childcare and pre-schools may re-open following your church’s re-opening plan and CDC, state, and local guidelines. This exception includes both third-party, non-UMC as well as church-sponsored child-care and pre-schools. In order to open child-care or pre-schools, special legal issues must be considered.
  5. Churches that are interested in conducting a drive-in worship must create a plan specifically related to the drive-in worship in addition to their general plan for re-opening. Although this is not a signal for the re-opening, it is an exemption for drive-in worship where congregation members remain in their cars and there is no contact.
